And yeah, at first sight it looks that the Audigy cards are overpriced (at least the retail ones), but I read that the external unit supports Asio2. I can only suggest you look Echo audio products. The cheapest card MiaMIDI at the cost of ~125$ is a great card, and will do just fine what you explained you need.

It's a game card with quite a decent audio chip as well. I'm not much of a gamer, but what attracted me to the Santa Cruz was it 18 bit AD-DA converters. It's a 16 bit card, with 2 extra bits to more accurately calculate the 16 bit samples. CD.
